The following FREE classes are available at Mabel Lee Hawkins Center for Student Success. Whether you want to prepare for the GED exam, learn to use a computer, brush up on academic skills, or acquire more English language skills, we have a class that's just right for you! Students who wish to enroll should go by Room 171 or call 769-4095 to take a placement test for the appropriate level classes. No Social Security Number is needed to register for these classes.
FALL GED Classes
Classes are four week sessions, covering the same content in each session.
Session 1 is August 25 - Sept. 18
Session 2 is Sept. 22 - Oct. 16
Session 3 is Oct. 20 - Nov. 13
Session 4 is Nov. 17 - Dec. 12
Each class session is 2 hours long. These classes are offered in the morning (9-11 am) or early evening (6-8 pm).
GED Writing
Four week session one day a week consisting of relevant study and practice for the writing portion of the GED exam. Areas to be covered include: Identifying errors in passages, brainstorming, organizing and writing an essay.
GED Reading
Four week session one day a week class includes learning the reading skills and reading content areas needed to correctly respond to GED exam questions.
GED Math I
This class meets twice a week for four weeks. Students will briefly review fractions, percents, decimals, and statistics as they relate to the GED math exam.
GED Math II
This class meets twice a week for each four week session. Students will study algebra and geometry related to the GED math exam.
Adult Computer Basics
Learn computer basics once a week (Thursdays 6-8 pm) including how to turn on and shut down a computer, save documents, use Microsoft Word, practice keyboarding skills, and develop a PowerPoint presentation.
New 5 Hour Fast Track GED Classes
These classes are offered two weeks before the Official GED Examination, just enough time for you to brush up on those math problems you have been having difficulty with. These 2-week classes also provide enough time to learn the required format for the GED essay question. These Fast Track classes are only one day a week which includes four hours of class time, one hour of computer lab and one hour for lunch.
GED Writing Fast Track
Writing fast track is a five hour session of practice for the writing portion of the GED exam. Content consists of practicing identifying errors or misplaced sentences in passages, and actual writing practice for the GED essay.
GED Math Fast Track
Math fast track highlights how to perform math problems including word problems, fractions, decimals, algebra, and geometry to prepare for the GED Exam.
FALL ESL CLASSES
Citizenship
Students study citizenship questions, practice for their citizenship interview, and learn about resources on the web which will help them prepare for the citizenship process. This class meets once a week (Tuesdays 6-8 pm).
Beginning ESL Classes
Classes meet twice each week on Tuesdays and Thursdays in the mornings (9-11 am) or evenings (6-8 pm) for 16 weeks. Students who know little or no English are welcome to take this class. The basics such as numbers, colors, shopping phrases, giving personal information, and common food vocabulary are covered.
ESL Intermediate/Advanced
Classes meet twice a week in the mornings (9-11 am Tuesdays and Thursdays) or evenings (6-8 pm Mondays and Wednesdays). Students will study life skills and advanced grammar such as the present and past perfect tenses of verbs.
ESL to GED
This class is for ESL students who want to study for the GED in English and then go on to take college classes. Students study in class two days a week (Mondays and Wednesdays 9-11 am) and have lab assignments throughout the week. The next step after this class is to enter the GED classes.
GED Español at Lincoln Jackson Family Center
Students will study the content areas of Math, Science, Social Studies, Writing, and Reading as they relate to preparing for the GED exam in Spanish. The class will meet twice a week for 14 weeks on Tuesday and Thursday evenings 6-8 pm.
Multi-Level ESL Classes Offered In The Community: (Beginning Sept. 8)
All levels of ESL will meet together and basic to advanced material will be used according to the appropriate levels of students. These classes are held for 14 weeks.
On Monday and Wednesday evenings (6-8 pm), classes are conducted at Texico High School, Fort Sumner Elementary School, Lindsey Elementary School in Portales (childcare provided), and locally at Lincoln Jackson Family Center (childcare provided).
