The increasing use of library automation is expected to spur job growth among library technicians. The U.S. Dept. of Labor suggests that employment of library technicians will grow as fast as the average for all occupations through 2010.

| What does a library technician do? |
- Helps librarians acquire, prepare and organize materials
- Assists users in finding information
- Teaches students/patrons to use the library and media center
- Assists in planning programs sponsored by the library
- Receives and checks out books: maintains circulation desk
|
- Good computer skills
- Good oral and written communication skills
- Ability to do research
- Organizational skills
- Detail oriented
- Ability to work with the public
