The following FREE classes are available at Mabel Lee Hawkins Center for Student Success. Whether you want to prepare for the GED exam, learn to use a computer, brush up on academic skills, or acquire more English language skills, we have a class that's just right for you! Students who wish to enroll should go by Room 171 or call 575-769-4095 to take a placement test for the appropriate level classes. No Social Security Number is needed to register for these classes.
2010 Spring ABE/ESL CLASS SCHEDULE
Spring GED Classes
Most Classes are four week sessions, covering the same content in each session.
Session 1 is January 19-February 26 (6 weeks)
Session 2 is March 1-April 16 (6 weeks)
Session 3 is April 19-May 14
Each class session is 2 hours long. The following classes are offered in the morning (9-11 am) or early evening (6-8 pm).
GED Writing
Six week sessions one day a week consisting of relevant study and practice for the writing portion of the GED exam. Areas to be covered include: Identifying errors in passages, brainstorming, organizing and writing an essay.
GED Reading
Four week session one day a week class includes learning the reading skills and reading content areas needed to correctly respond to GED exam questions in language arts, science, and social studies.
GED Math I*
This class meets twice a week for six weeks. Students will briefly review fractions, percents, decimals, and statistics as they relate to the GED math exam.
GED Math II*
This class meets twice a week for each six week session. Students will study algebra and geometry related to the GED math exam.
Adult Computer Basics
This class meets once a week (6-8 pm) and will cover basic computer operations including word processing and learning how to use email.
*Last 4 week session of math classes are twice a week from 9 am to 12 pm or 6 pm to 9pm.
Spring ESL CLASSES
January 19-May 14
Beginning ESL Classes
Classes meet twice each week on Tuesdays and Thursdays in the mornings (9-11) or evenings (6-8) for 16 weeks.
Students who know little or no English are welcome to take this class. The basics such as numbers, colors, shopping phrases, giving personal information, and common food vocabulary are covered.
ESL Intermediate/Advanced
Classes meet twice a week in the mornings (9-11 am Tuesdays and Thursdays) or evenings (6-8 pm) for 16 weeks. Students will study life skills and advanced grammar such as the present and past perfect tenses of verbs.
ESL to GED
This class is for ESL students who want to study for the GED in English because college is the next step. Students study in class two days a week (Mondays and Wednesdays 9-11 am) and have lab assignments throughout the week. The next step after this class is to enter the GED classes.
Multi-Level ESL Classes Offered In Surrounding Area:
All levels of ESL will be together and basic to advanced material will be used according to the appropriate levels of students. These classes are held for sixteen weeks.
On Tuesday and Thursday evenings (6-8 pm), classes are conducted at Farwell High School, Bovina Fireman’s Training Hall, and Fort Sumner Schools. On Monday and Wednesday evenings (6-8 pm) ESL Classes are conducted at Lincoln Jackson Family Center. Please call (575) 769-4095 to verify the offsite classes.
GED Español
Individuals wanting to study for the GED exam in Spanish are welcome to attend this class at Lincoln Jackson Family Center on Tuesday and Thursday evenings (6-8 pm).
