President Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal initiatives transformed the economic landscape of New Mexico. Its legacy of employing upwards of 40 percent of New Mexico's population during the Great Depression of the 1930's can be seen in public works, such as the stone work at Hillcrest Park; the Roosevelt County Court House, Portales; and the building on 4th and Mitchell previously a Post Office which contains a large mural. Many other murals and paintings were created during this time, which are found in locations such as: the ENMU Administration Building; the Dr. Walter D. Dabbs Library at CCC; Melrose School; and De Baca County Court House, Ft. Sumner.
