Clovis Community College and the Eula Mae Edwards Museum/Gallery Present The New Deal: A 75th Anniversary Celebration

The National New Deal Association's exhibit of New Mexico's photo-documented New Deal Treasures will be on exhibit during March and April, 2009, in the Eula Mae Edwards Museum/Gallery, Clovis Community College, 417 Schepps Ave. The show consists of 40 photographs of paintings by artists such as Victor Higgins, Howard Schleeter, E. Martin Hennings, and Paul Lantz.

Kathryn Flynn, noted WPA author of The New Deal: A 75th Anniversary Celebration, will be speaking on this subject in Town Hall at CCC on March 4th at 2:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. with a reception in the museum/gallery following each presentation. These events are free to the public.

President Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal initiatives transformed the economic landscape of New Mexico. Its legacy of employing upwards of 40 percent of New Mexico's population during the Great Depression of the 1930's can be seen in public works, such as the stone work at Hillcrest Park; the Roosevelt County Court House, Portales; and the building on 4th and Mitchell previously a Post Office which contains a large mural. Many other murals and paintings were created during this time, which are found in locations such as: the ENMU Administration Building; the Dr. Walter D. Dabbs Library at CCC; Melrose School; and De Baca County Court House, Ft. Sumner.
