Clovis Community College Presents Damn Yankees...Clovis - Fast-paced and devilishly clever, "Damn Yankees" is a home-run hit whose all-American subject matter and irreverent sense of humor have brought many a sports fan into the theatre. The show includes a catchy score filled with rousing production numbers and popular favorites like "(Ya Gotta Have) Heart" and "Whatever Lola Wants."
Directed by Christy Mendoza and featuring talented community actors of all ages, "Damn Yankees" follows middle-aged baseball fanatic Joe Boyd (Pat McDaniel) as he trades his soul to the devil for a chance to lead his favorite team to victory against the New York Yankees. His dreams are soon fulfilled when he finds himself leading the team in both hitting and pitching, but there is a price to be paid, and the Devil (Caleb Brandon) and his seductive assistant Lola (Jennifer Brandon) are waiting to collect.
Based on the book The Year the Yankees Lost the Pennant by Douglass Wallop, the original play opened on Broadway at the 46th Street Theatre on May 5, 1955 and ran 1019 performances. It won seven Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Best Actor and Actress, and Best Choreography.
Clovis Community College's performance features a cast of 35 talented local performers. This diverse group includes a lawyer (Richard Rowley II); two radio personalities (Len Vohs, Jennifer Brandon); a singing plumber (Chris Cummins), a local golf pro (Perry Jackson); a CAFB wilderness guide (Jeanette Hatton); an Elvis Impersonator (Mike Tafoya); two CCC professors (Dana Albright, Ramon Jones); two Clovis News Journal employees (Leslie Nagy, Jennette Lovett) and many other adults and children singing and dancing in this delightful summer musical.
