Clovis Community College Cosmetology Department to Provide American Cancer Society Program, Look Good...Feel Better...Clovis, NM - As of December 1, 2006, Clovis Community College is a certified Look Good...Feel Better facility. In partnership with the Cosmetic and Toiletry Foundation Association, the American Cancer Society, and the National Cosmetology Association, CCC will have certified cosmetologists, Look Good...Feel Better volunteers, who can assist cancer survivors with their personal makeup and wig care during their medical treatment.
Look Good...Feel Better is a national program that provides cancer survivors with a free 12-step makeup kit along with a wig and/or turban to assist the patient in feeling better about their appearance during chemotherapy. Clovis is one of 13 locations throughout New Mexico that provide this service. Cancer patients go through several skin, hair, and body changes while receiving treatment, and through this program, patients can receive the makeup instruction and body care to address sensitivity issues, hair loss, and looking their best while receiving treatment.
Involved in coordinating and providing the training are Julie Montoya, American Cancer Society Quality of Life Manager, Loretta Tafoya, Area Trainer for Look Good...Feel Better, both of Albuquerque, and Kim Adams, Plains Regional Cancer Center oncology nurse. Lori Hicks, CCC Cosmetology Director, who heads up the program in Clovis, has first hand experience with the positive effects looking your best can have on a person. She helped her mother with her day-to-day toiletries during her chemo treatments. According to Lori, "the cancer patient has a lot going on with just trying to keep up with their medicines and changes in their body, helping them look better through applying makeup and wearing an attractive wig are just as much a therapy as any medicine."
