NYC Hip Hop Dancers Take Center Stage in Special Performance...Clovis, NM (October 27, 2007) -- Talented break dance specialists combine athletic ability and graceful choreography in a thrilling tribute to an urban street phenomenon as the Clovis Community College Cultural Arts Series and Citizens Bank of Clovis present BREAK! The Urban Funk Spectacular on October 27 at 7 pm in Marshall Auditorium.
Tracing the evolution of hip-hop dancing over the last thirty years, BREAK! is a high energy celebration of this creatively charged and totally unique American art form. Featuring a combination of pure physical strength and agility, New York's finest urban artists perform breathtaking movements to a pumping soundtrack and a live DJ who is a choreographic delight himself. Many of the BREAK! performers have been featured dancers with showbiz legends including Madonna, Jay-Z, Puff Daddy, Ringo Starr and Luther Vandross.
"They call it breaking because you dance to the break of the song," said Otoniel "Aquaboogy" Vasquez, a master of "popping" and "locking." Vasquez' got his nickname from his style of dancing which resembles liquid slow motion. Kumiko 'Locking Q' Naito is an award-winning break dancer from Japan. Described as a human accordion, Naito wills her body into some of the tightest dance moves in the business. Kenny Muhammad, a well-known beatboxer commonly referred to as the "Human Orchestra," has collaborated with many rappers and performed with the New York Philharmonic.
BREAK! incorporates five types of hip-hop into its performances--dance, rap, DJ, graffiti and fashion. The hip-hop form requires improvisation and footwork patterns that are recombined into countless rhythms and styles. The show features intricate footwork, power tumbling, head-spinning, amazing freeze positions and much more.
