Clovis to Welcome Acclaimed Classical Pianist...C;pvos, NM (March, 2008) - Clovis Community College will present a concert by acclaimed Venezuelan pianist, Gabriela Montero, on Friday, March 14 at 7:00 p.m. in Marshall Auditorium as part of the 2007-2008 Cultural Arts Series sponsored by CCC and The Citizens Bank of Clovis. Tickets are $15 general admission and $10 for seniors, military and students, and may be purchased at the CCC Cashiers' Windows, the Box Office the evening of the performance, or by calling 575.769.4035. Clovis is the only stop in New Mexico on this leg of Montero's tour.
Recently profiled on CBS 60 Minutes and NPR's All Things Considered, Montero is known for her inspired performances of core repertoire and her deeply felt and technically brilliant improvisations. Born in Venezuela, Montero studied at London's Royal Academy of Music and won the bronze medal at the 1995 Chopin International Piano Competition in Warsaw. She has appeared with orchestras throughout the world, recently debuting with the New York Philharmonic and Lorin Maazel.
Oftentimes compared to Bach, Mozart and Beethoven who were known as brilliant improvisers, Montero has worked hard to revive the spontaneity that was once a pianist's stock-in-trade. She has a hit album on the ECM label called Bach and Beyond, which features her own riffs on some of J.S. Bach's best-known melodies.
While Montero continues to perform standard repertory in major concert halls, she's bringing her gift for jazz-style improv to unusual venues. Earlier this year, she played Joe's Pub in New York City, extemporizing on Bach and on tunes picked by the audience — her version of Gloria Gaynor's disco anthem "I Will Survive" brought down the house.
Montero typically concludes her concert with a demonstration of her improvisations, inviting members of the audience to suggest melodies for reinterpretation.
