Be part of one of the fastest growing occupations in the nation!
New Mexico Employment and Outlook data suggests that the statewide need for paralegals will increase by 58% from 1998 to 2008 with Santa Fe, Albuquerque, and Las Cruces showing the greatest increase in opportunities for employment.

What does a legal assistant do?
Legal assistants (also known as paralegals) assist attorneys in the delivery of legal services They:
  • Draft documents
  • Summarize documents—write briefs
  • Conduct research
  • Prepare exhibits
  • Conduct interviews
  • Maintain work files

What necessary skills do you need?
  • Good oral and written communication skills
  • Good computer skills
  • Ability to do research
  • Ability to think analytically
  • Ability to probe and ask questions
  • Detail oriented
  • Ability to work under pressure
  • Ability to work independently
  • Flexible and organized
  • Ethical; maintains confidences
  • Acknowledges role as a legal assistant who does not give legal advice
