Proctoring Services

Effective Fall 2020 semester, Clovis Community College is switching our proctoring services to Respondus, from ProctorU.  We are adapting to an ever-changing student and instruction structure by offering this new service.

LockDown Browser is a custom browser that locks down the testing environment in Canvas. When students use LockDown Browser to access a quiz, they are unable to print, copy, visit other websites, access other applications, or close a quiz until it is submitted for grading.

Respondus Monitor, a webcam feature for LockDown Browser that records students during online quizzes that are expected to be proctored. Respondus Monitor creates a virtual proctoring environment for students to take quizzes and exams from home.  When this feature is enabled for a quiz, students are required to use a webcam and microphone with LockDown Browser. After the quiz is complete, an instructor can review details of the assessment, even the recorded video

Note: Your student will need a webcam. Please check with your Division Chair, how students will be obtaining a webcam, if you are using the Monitor. Using Monitor is optional.

  • To use the Monitor you need to use the Lockdown Browser settings.
  • If you plan to use Monitor in your course, we suggest that it is listed in the course syllabus prior to the first day of class.
  • Once a student starts the exams their webcam will begin to record the student.
  • Any suspicious behavior is automatically flagged.
  • Respondus will record student movements and will automatically flag the exam if a student leaves the view, if their eyes wander, or if another person comes into the screen.
  • A good practice will be to ask the students to display their ID Card on the webcam, their face, and also an environment scan at the beginning before the test begins.
  • Upon completion of the exam, the full recording will be available to the instructor in Canvas after processing is completed. This may take a few hours. This allows the instructor to review and determine the integrity of the test takers.

  • Windows: 10, 8, 7
  • Mac: MacOS 10.12 or higher
  • Ios: 11.0+ (iPad only)
    • Instructor has to enable this device in Respondus Lockdown Browser settings
  • Chromebooks
    • No longer in Beta phase and is now available as a final release! It is no longer necessary for instructors to enable the Chromebook option per exam.

Alternate options for students that don’t have a compatible device:

  • Use another device
  • Check out a CSS laptop (Limited Supply)
  • Trio students can check out a laptop with Trio (limited supply)
  • Check out a Windows 10 laptop from the Helpdesk (limited supply)
  • Make an appointment at an approved testing center

When LockDown Browser is used with “Instructor Live Proctoring,” the instructor watches students remotely during an online test. This feature requires the use of a video conference system such as Zoom or MS Teams and is intended for small classes where the instructor can view all students on the screen at once.

  • Create a Practice Exam to ensure your first exam using LockDown Browser runs smoothly!
  • Have students take an ungraded practice quiz that requires the use of LockDown Browser, before the graded exam occurs.
  • Leave the quiz available for the duration of the course, with unlimited attempts, so students can access it again if they use a different computer.
  • Create an announcement in Canvas to provide students with links to Student Resources.

Use this student guide for your own knowledge as well as student support.
