Face-to-Face Course Redesign

Face-to-Face Class Redesign, a Title V project at Clovis Community College

As part of the Title V Redesign Activity, faculty are redesigning the campus classroom to engage students with active learning strategies and innovated instructional technology. Participating faculty members are exploring different restructuring methods that will allow them to integrate technology into the lecture experience. This type of setting, where technology is integrated, increases student engagement and improves the student's educational experience.

Interactive Monitors

interactive monitorLarge interactive monitors are being adopted as instructional tools to present content and improve student engagement.
English instructor Emilee Nieman is one of several instructors who use the large interactive monitors to present course content. The instructor displays websites, photos, music, and videos to enhance the learning experience. The instructor can also "write" on the monitor to indicate points of interest or to add textual information regarding the lesson she is covering.

Nieman is also using Surface Pro tablets with her students. Surface Pro uses the wireless function of Miracast, which enables the English instructor to move around the classroom while still having the ability to present resources on the monitor.

Increasing student engagement is one of the major benefits of integrating technology into a lesson. Contact an  Instructional Technologist in the Faculty Development Center to learn best practices with using a large interactive monitors and/or other devices in the classroom.

High Tech Classrooms

Our High Tech Classroom is a collaborative learning space with enhanced supportive technology.  This classroom allows students to absorb educational content from the instructor using an interactive projector and instructor station.  Students are able to effectively collaborate with their peers on projects by utilizing advanced sharing and screen casting software on classroom workstations and laptops.

"I am so excited to be piloting a new section of First Year Experience at Clovis Community College in the Title V funded, "high-tech" classroom.  This progressive classroom features five collaborative learning stations, which include interactive monitors, personal laptops, breakaway seating, and white boards.  Students taking this course are often asked to work as a team to brainstorm an idea and make some sort of presentation.  In this setting, students can easily work as a team to organize ideas, research for supporting information , create an appropriate output, and display their work for the entire class.  When necessary, students can create a more private atmosphere for themselves by easily moving their desk space away from the group.  When it is time or me, as an instructor, to project specific information, I am able to cast my screen to all learning station monitors at once for their close inspection.  Lastly, it has been amazing to utilize a more relaxed, seated section of the classroom where I am able to conference with students individually and give the private feedback in a friendly setting.  Rooms like this allow the students to really reach their fullest potentials!" -E. Thomas

Yuja

Yuji allows faculty to record videos from their desktops as well as enables them to record live classes.  This particular lecture capture software provides faculty with the ability to edit videos, embed questions into the videos, and offer closed caption for their recorded lectures.

"I enjoy recording my live lectures. It provides me with the ability to give my students access to the lectures they may miss as well as giving me material to add to my online classes.  I like the editing capabilities, which allow me to trim off unwanted material." -Vicki Bridinger-De Leon
