Registered Behavior Technician Training

Registered Behavior Technician Training

Supporting Positive Change Through Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA)

What is an RBT?

A Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) is a paraprofessional certified by the Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB) who works directly with individuals receiving behavior-analytic services. RBTs implement treatment plans designed by Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBAs) and help clients build essential life skills, manage behaviors, and achieve meaningful progress.

Role of an RBT

RBTs play a critical role on the ABA team by:

  • Delivering one-on-one behavioral interventions
  • Collecting data on client progress
  • Assisting with skill acquisition and behavior reduction plans
  • Collaborating with supervisors and families
  • Ensuring ethical and compassionate care

Where RBTs Work

RBTs can be found in a variety of settings, including:

  • Clinics and ABA therapy centers
  • Schools and educational programs
  • Homes and communities
  • Hospitals or developmental centers

Becoming an RBT

To become an RBT, individuals must:

  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Have a high school diploma or equivalent
  • Complete a 40-hour RBT training program
  • Pass a competency assessment conducted by a BCBA
  • Pass the RBT exam administered by the BACB
  • Undergo a background check
  • Ongoing supervision and adherence to the RBT Ethics Code are required to maintain certification.

Why RBTs Matter

RBTs are often the “front line” of ABA services, building strong relationships with clients and helping translate therapy goals into real-life success. Their work is essential in supporting individuals with autism and other developmental conditions.
